1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how the band got started.
We’re Balu Brigada, a 2-piece alt rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. We grew up in a creative household, our mum being an actor and our dad a dancer, so we leaned into the arts pretty naturally in our childhood. Eventually, we picked up guitars and started playing horrendous rock covers at our parents’ house (Muse/RHCP/Iron Maiden etc) until Pierre was old enough to pass as 18 and play local gigs in Auckland. That eventually evolved into us writing and producing our own music and the goal since then, has been to play our lil songs to whoever wants to listen to them.
2. How would you describe your music?
We tend to genre mash, so this is an answer that quickly gets messy if we try and list the extensive buffet of sounds that we draw from. Simply put, we’d describe it as Alt Rock, with an emphasis on dance-grooves and psych rock sonics.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The Strokes, Steve Lacy and Frank Ocean.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
The song came out of a brief romantic rendezvous that started explosively and turned sour pretty quickly. One of those ones …
5. What would surprise people most about you?
We both think Spiderman 1 is a slept-on masterpiece that should be referenced on the daily.
