1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how the band got started.
Hi my name is Oli Martin & I’m the lead singer of Krooked Kings. After coming home from an LDS mission at 18 at choosing to leave the roots I grew up in, I picked up a guitar and started writing as a mode of therapy.
Shortly after coming home, jamming in basements at the University of Utah, I met Paul Colgan (Lead Guitar), David Macey (Keys), Matt Monosson (Bass), & Quinn Casper (Drums) and together we formed Krooked Kings.
2.How would you describe your music?
I think we are continually figuring out our sound as we keep going, but as a band we try to write genuine & introspective lyrics paired with chord progressions that produce an emotional response.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
Each of us have pretty different tastes, but after touring and spending time together in the van we listen to a lot of Radiohead, The Killers, The Strokes, and this year found a band called Wunderhorse which we fell in love with.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
“Sick of Being Young” is a song about feeling discredited or written off. Being in a band, a lot of people have told us, “that’s a good hobby” or “have fun while it lasts.” Sick Of Being Young stands as a response to those critics in your life.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
I would say that we have no idea what we’re doing. I think there’s a lot of pressure these days to have life figured out, when no one really does. We’ve connected with fans who have similar doubts & questions as us & I think enjoy someone saying it out loud.
