Alternative New Music Friday #Happens

March 15th, 2024

Happy Friday! A major snowstorm in Colorado has delayed KTCL/Denver’s “Keggs & Eggs” celebration from this morning at 7am to tonight at 7pm with Misterwives, Weathers, and The Ramona Flowers providing the free entertainment at the station’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration at Jackson’s Lodo.

Weezer also celebrates tonight with a special 30th anniversary show at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles with Dogstar. The full-circle moment mirrors the band’s March 1992 show at Raji’s where Weezer opened for Dogstar. Weezer’s ‘Voyage To The Blue Planet’ 30th Anniversary Of The Blue Album Tour begins September 4th.

THIS WEEK’S ALTERNATIVE NEW MUSIC DISCOVERY

Goth Babe “Mexico” (further./ Mom+Pop)

Australia’s Goth Babe released his latest single “Mexico” on March 13th. It’s a collaboration with College Station, TX’s Surfaces and is not part of Goth Babe’s January 26 debut album, Lola, an homage to the namesake sailboat on which he now lives. Having spent time living in his car, a tiny house, and a camper van, punctuated with all-inclusive moments of joy and unfettered freedom as well as loneliness and trauma, the album is a sonic salve from the heaviness of the world. His breakthrough single “Sometimes” was released in 2018. Goth Babe will be performing at The Governors Ball and Bonnaroo music festivals in June followed by headline U.S. tour dates beginning August 30th. Find the tour dates HERE

Letdown. “Hate Myself” (Big Loud Rock)

Chicago/Nashville-based Letdown. has shared his relatable new single “Hate Myself.” Letdown. (period included) is the mastermind/visionary Blake Coddington, who had this to say about his new single: “The concept of self-loathing revolves around acknowledging that one’s life has reached a nadir and ultimately embracing this reality. Engaging in a futile struggle against intrusive thoughts proves to be counterproductive, as one succumbs to their influence and reacts in manners they have long yearned for. It is a sentiment shared by many, this desire to revolt against the monotony of our existence, yet we comprehend that improvement lies on the horizon.”  In 2022, Letdown. signed to Big Loud Rock and released his breakthrough lead single “Crying In The Shower.”

Love Fame Tragedy “Don’t You Want To Sleep With Someone Normal” (Bright Antenna)

Love Fame Tragedy is the solo project of Liverpool, England’s Matthew “Murph” Murphy, singer/songwriter of The Wombats. “Don’t Want To Sleep With Someone Normal” is from the forthcoming second album, Life Is A Killer, which drops March 29th. Murph is over a year into sobriety after hitting rock bottom and realizing he was close to losing everything he cared about. On the single, Don’t Sleep With Someone Normal” – a glistening sonic Dear John wherein John himself is suggesting a split might be the most sensible option – fictionalises “just how ridiculous things got.”
