1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on you got started with The Wombats and now your solo project.
My name is Murph and I started a band called The Wombats in Liverpool in 2003. After four albums, I really wanted to experience what it was like to make something alone or with complete control rather than having to make compromises, which you essentially have to do in a band. Love Fame Tragedy is what happened. I wrote all of the songs and recorded and toured a lot just before the pandemic and then the album came out in the pandemic, which I wasn’t too pleased about. So I decided to do another one.
2.How would you describe your music?
I’m not sure how to describe it best but I like weird, interesting and profound lyrics but also poppy, catchy, slightly somewhat emotional music, things that kind of wrench the gut a little bit. So I slam them together as often as I possibly can. Sometimes people like what happens.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
I was very very into Radiohead when I was younger, and I think that’s what kind of really kickstarted this journey. I was listening to a lot of EDM and happy hardcore music when I was in my early teens, and then I heard Creep once and I was done. Otherwise, definitely The Clash, The Beatles. I kind of feel like a very fast Beach Boys meets Elliott Smith is the best way to describe certainly The Wombats, but with Love Fame Tragedy, I try and tone that down a bit.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
The current single “Don’t You Want To Sleep With Someone Normal?” is kind of about all the weird shit that I was doing before I got sober, and all the stuff that I inevitably put my wife through, even though I couldn’t see it at the time. All of these songs seem quite heavy until you listen to them, it’s quite a fun song I think.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
I’m an obsessed golfer. I golf a lot, well not as much anymore because of the kids, but golf was probably my biggest passion and then music came second for a long time, I just wasn’t as good at golf as I was music. Apart from that, I was a pretty good cricketer when I was younger. I don’t know, maybe I’m not that surprising a person.
