August 2nd, 2024

Happy Friday! Alternative New Music Friday #Happens with new albums out today from The Smashing Pumpkins, Jack White, Orville Peck, and Brigitte Calls Me Baby.

Some good news and bad news. Let’s start with the good news.

Big props to Eddie Gutierrez at KJEE/Santa Barbara, CA. The station continues to be one of the top rated stations in the format in its 30th year. In the just released Nielsen Spring ‘24 Book, KJEE is up to 6.5 12+. Eddie G says, “We went from 6.0 to a 6.5 which is number 4 in the market. When it comes to the money demo’s we came in #2 P18-34 with a 12.9 same rating we had the previous book. For P18-49 we are #2 with a 11.1 rating up from a 9.1 and P25-54 we are  #1 with a 11.5 up from a 9.8 last book.”

Sad to report that Audacy RVP/Programming Ross Mahoney had his position eliminated. Mahoney was overseeing WSFS (104.3 The Shark)/Miami, KBZT (ALT 94.9)/San Diego, KRBZ (ALT 96.5)/Kansas City, and WQMP (ALT 101.9)/Orlando, which flipped yesterday from Alternative to JAMZ 102.  Bummed to hear that Ron “CRASH” Kissell got caught up in downsizing at WKZQ/Myrtle Beach after 16 years. Please reach out to our good friends and show your love. In other news, Corus/Calgary has signed on Iconic Alternative 107.3 The Edge. Get the 411 in Alternative News.

ALTERNATIVE NEW MUSIC DISCOVERY

The Smashing Pumpkins “Sighommi” (Martha’s Music/Thirty Tigers)

Listen & Download HERE.

The Smashing Pumpkins released “Sighommi” today. It’s the lead single from their 13th album, Aghori Mhori Mei, which was released at the same time as the single.

Frontman Billy Cordan teased on social media, “We want people to hear the record as one body of work, and they can decide, the value of what we have done.” He explains, “In the writing of this new album I became intrigued with the well-worn axiom, ‘you can’t go home again. Which I have found personally to be true in form but thought well, what if we tried anyway? Not so much in looking backwards with sentimentality but rather as a means to move forward; to see if in the balance of success and failure that our ways of making music circa 1990-1996 would still inspire something revelatory.”

The Smashing Pumpkins began their summer tour with Green Day on July 29th at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. Find the tour dates HERE.

Teenage Dads “Boyfriend” (Chugg Music)

Listen & Download HERE.

Australia 4-piece Teenage Dads released “Boyfriend” on July 30th. It’s from their sophomore album, Majordomo, set for release on August 23rd.

The band says, “‘Boyfriend’ is a triumphant song about seizing the day and not worrying about what everyone else is saying and doing. You’ve come to terms with what you can’t control and you’re finally opening your lungs and singing.”

The video is directed by the band’s drummer Vincent Kinna. “The ‘Boyfriend’ video formed in combination with the lyrics, themes and the feelings I felt when listening to the song; wholesomeness, vulnerability, melancholy and things like that,” Vin explains on the inspiration for the video. “A relationship story felt right but I wanted something more innocent and unique, and that’s how we ended up with a boy and his living TV best friend. The sad ending serves as a poignant reminder that there aren’t always happy endings in life so we need to seize the day and enjoy the ride. Scrambling for locations, we ended up filming it in my old room. I wish it looked as cool as it does in the video!”

Teenage Dads won the 2023 ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist Of The Year. The Mornington Peninsula band will play US tour dates with Dayglow beginning October 31st in Tulsa. Find the tour dates HERE.
