1. Please introduce yourself and give us he backstory on what led you to sign with Sub Pop Records for your solo debut.
My name is Tunde Adebimpe, I am a musician and artist living in Los Angeles. In 2019 TV On The Radio took a break and I went through a bunch of old songs I had, culled together some demos and began to shop them around. I have loved Sub Pop since I was a teenager, the label and their output (specifically at that time Nirvana, Mudhoney and Billy Childish) are a huge part of why I wanted to start making music in the first place, so I knew I wanted to get the songs in front of them when the time came. Really honored to be a part of such a great roster of artists, past and present.
2. How would you describe your solo music compared to TV On The Radio?
Fewer people involved, higher stakes? Lower stakes, newer feelings involved? No steaks mostly vegetarian, aiming for vegan? I have no idea how to describe my stuff in comparison to TVOTR’s, they are extensions of each other and I like them both so the differences are for other people to point out, which is exciting for me.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
Grace Jones, Lee Scratch Perry, Queen, Nirvana, Bowie, Nina Simone, air, water, walking around and complete silence.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
“Magnetic” is an all purpose power up. A lot of the songs on the record were written during the pandemic and read like spells / sounds to break an evil hex. This is one of those, It’s a hex repellent, a companion to Bad Brains’ “Supertouch / Shift”.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
I love performing and playing shows but being in / in front of a crowd is usually the absolute last place I want to be.
