Peninsula Radio Group Launches KWVV 104.9 K-WAVE, Alaska’s Alternative

January 10th, 2025

Former Last Frontier Mediactive/Anchorage GM Michael Dukes has announced the launch of Peninsula Radio Group Inc., a family-owned media company serving the Alaska Peninsula. Dukes and his wife Terri acquired the 5-station group from Peninsula Communications Inc., which includes the rebranded Alternative KWVV (104.9 K-WAVE, Alaska’s Alternative)/Homer, AK.

Dukes said, “Previously KWAVE was a home brewed ‘Indie/alt’ station that mostly played b-sides of some mainstream but mostly lesser known artists. The new KWAVE is the offspring of 94/7 Anchorage, which I helmed at launch and over the last 5 years. We’re bringing the same focus on mainstream adult alternative, with the same humor and attitude as well as community mindedness that made the format such a hit in Anchorage.”

The station is modeled after his previous success with KZND 94/7 Alternative Anchorage. Dukes is a third-generation Alaskan and self-proclaimed radio aficionado since the age of 16.

Peninsula Radio Group’s 5-stations on the Kenai Peninsula includes Country KPEN (CHET FM), Classic Hits KXBA (K-BAY), and News/Talk KGTL & KPEN-AM. Following a comprehensive overhaul of broadcast, automation, and traffic systems, all the stations were relaunched on January 1st.

The family-run venture sees Michael as the chief broadcaster, Terri managing traffic and accounting, daughters Maggie and Emily handling traffic coordination and news/social media, respectively, and son Xander taking the reins of production management and on-air talent.
