1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how the band got started.
Hi, I’m Jessica. Deep Sea Diver began as a solo project that I had started while I was touring in Beck’s band as his lead guitarist. It morphed into a band when Peter (my partner and drummer) joined and we released our first album “History Speaks” in 2012. Since then we have released 4 albums & have had the opportunity to tour with Death Cab For Cutie, Pearl Jam, The Shins, Wilco, Spoon and more.
2. How would you describe your music?
I would describe our music as guitar rock with dreamy, cinematic elements that bend & play with dynamics.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences are – Yeah Yeah Yeahs, David Bowie, Bjork, St Vincent, Feist, Nick Cave & Radiohead.
4. What was the inspiration behind your new single, 'What Do I Know'?
The song “What Do I Know” came out of a very playful and existential place. I needed a reminder to not take myself so seriously and I ran with that theme in the recording and production of the song. Most of it was recorded very quickly by me at my home studio and it is comprised almost entirely of first takes on drums, guitar and synth. I also loved exploring some of my guitar influences like Television, Brian Eno, Wilco and mashing all of those up into my own rock song. I had fun being free with the lyrics and adding in strange vivid lines like “there’s a spider in the milkshake”…
5. What would surprise people most about you?
I could absolutely whoop anyone’s ass at air hockey, I could parallel park a van with a trailer with only an inch of room to spare on either side, and I love and am wildly energized by American football and you will find me most Sundays standing on my couch rooting for the Seahawks, the Bills and the Lions.
