1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how the band got started.
Hey, it’s Hoyt Yeatman here, I’m the lead singer and guitarist of Sitting On Saturn. We all met in a performance-based rock school called Rock Nation when we were in elementary school. The school would rotate the students around in different bands so we’d learn to play different songs with different people and have little concerts that our friends and family would attend. When we got older we wanted to form our own band and write our music and so we did. We had fun in high school playing locally but it really started to take off in college in San Diego. We played tons of house shows and local venues and people really responded.
2. How would you describe your music?
I would describe our music as a mixture of alternative, indie, ska, punk, pop, and heavy rock…I love so many genres of music and depending on how I feel and the emotion I want to portray comes out in the music I write.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences is a super hard question. I have too many to list but I started when I was really young listening to the Irish Rovers which has tons of harmony and amazing instrumentations and as I got older I fell in love with every 90s band out there. I love 70s, 80s and all sort of old school punk but I also adore the Beatles, Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte and Louis Prima!
4. What was the inspiration behind your new single, 'Ticket To New York'?
“Ticket To New York” was inspired by a past relationship and that feeling of when someone moves on and past you but you’re not there yet. The lyrics are kind of raw were uncomfortable at times for me to share but it was really cathartic getting the song out and I hope people like it.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
What may be most surprising is that I have Tourettes. I’ve had it since I was six and it’s just something I live with. It comes and goes and sometimes it’s worse (especially if I don’t get enough sleep or get a virus) but I’ve learned to suppress it around people so most don’t even know I have it. Mine takes the form of movement tics like scrunching my nose or feeling the need to kind of jolt – people ask if I have hiccups so I guess it kind of looks like that. What’s weird is when I’m on stage or playing music I don’t feel the need to tic.
