1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how you got started.
Hi, I’m Suki Waterhouse! I’m a singer and songwriter and actor. I first started writing about a decade ago and self released a few singles. I didn’t know it at the time but one of those early songs, “Good Looking,” would have a huge moment years later. In 2022, after a decade of writing, I finally made a record called I Can’t Let Go and started working with my label Sub Pop. It’s been a whirlwind few years! My next record Memoir of a Sparklemuffin comes out in September and I’m so excited for this new chapter.
2. How would you describe your music?
I would think I’m in the Alternative/Indie category!
3. Who are your biggest influences?
When I think back to who had major influences on me, I think one of the earliest memories I have of a song that I was struck by was “In The Waiting Line” by Zero 7, I sang that song at school recitals for sure. That song felt like an epiphany to me. I remember listening to Mazzy Star, and again her music felt like a wake up call.. a signifier that there was a world out there I knew nothing of but wanted to discover. The same feeling with “Little Girl in Bloom” by Thin Lizzy. I loved The Velvet Underground, and Ani DiFranco – she would write about things I’d never heard a woman talk about before. Later on I was incredibly inspired by Lou Doillon.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
I wanted to write a song that could be played in the movie Clueless at the mall! It has a grungy garage rock feel that reminded me of that era of music and it was like my anthem to remind myself to get out of bed in the morning – I have a tendency to bed rot.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
I have terrible musical timing but I like to think that I turn that weakness into a strength!
