1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how you got started.
Hey, I’m Jay Putty! Im a songwriter/artist/producer out of Nashville. My journey into music started at 14 in the angsty metal/punk bands that were inspired by the early 2000s hot topic fueled bands like Hawthorne Heights, Escape The Fate, and more. I didn’t really get into pop music until I was about 18 and the rock band I was in became really obsessed with One Direction’s first album because of all the guitar but catchy choruses that were with it. I mean before I was an angsty teen I was fed a huge diet of Backstreet Boys, Nsync, O-Town, and Daniel Bedingfield the latter was the one I used to practice my dance moves in front of the mirror too. But the iteration of my music you hear now is an amalgamation of my scene roots from my teenage years like Like Moths to Flames, or My Chem and my more adult life experiences soundtracked by Parachute, OneRepublic, and Train.
2.How would you describe your music?
I call it happy go lucky folk pop. Or better summarized as music that sounds like what dad’s in jorts and white new balances look like. Fun. Positive. And self-aware enough to know that I’m cheesy but parmesan cheesy. So like you love it even though it’s cheesy.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
Right now I’m stuck and constantly inspired by Ben Rector, American Authors, The Eagles, and Sheppard. But I can’t stop listening to Noah Kahan’s Stick Season record so that will probably affect a lot of my writing from here on out!
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
Honestly, between 2020 and the end of 2022 I had given up being an artist. I didn’t feel like I had anything to say. And when I finally did it was because I spent 2022 at my dad’s funeral, my friend’s funeral, my best friend’s dad’s funeral, and my grandma’s funeral. I felt like there wasn’t anything there. Until Dec 2022, I was trying to recharge my worn down batteries in the smokies and I was overlooking the horizon. In that moment I felt my dad’s hand on my shoulder. Swear to God. It was him telling me “you’re going to be okay. You can’t see it yet but your best days are yet to come.” And I took that to my favorite collaborators Michael Mcquaid and Maggie James. We wrote the song in no lie 20 minutes. And it’s just a song that really means that it’s okay for you to not be where you want to be yet. Because your best days are truly yet to come. It’s how my dad was. It’s how my friend Brendan was. They were so positive. And it’s just my way of letting people know them.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
My brother Will and I were world ranked Yugioh players. 18th and 19th in the world respectively at one point. So when I’m on tour if anyone is trying to duel me. I will gladly take you up on that challenge
