1. Please introduce yourself and give us the backstory on how the band got started.
My name is Jack. I’m the singer of Dead Poet Society. We formed in college at a school in Boston called Berklee. Playing rock was never really something I had in mind, but after we wrote our first song together, I knew that this band was what I wanted. Will the drummer, and I joined a year after Jack, our guitarist and our old bassist had formed the band. After college we moved to California in 2016 and I’ve been grinding away ever since.
2.How would you describe your music?
On a basic level I would describe us as an Alt band that plays heavy riffs. We use a fretless guitar quite a bit, and that gives us the ability to try riffs that wouldn’t normally be possible. I also sing with very clean all style melodies because we like the contrast of feeling heavy without necessarily being heavy.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
Our influences range so much because everybody in the band listens to such different music, but in the rock world, Muse, Royal Blood, and Highly Suspect are some pretty big influences of ours.
4. What was the inspiration behind your current single?
We had the first verse of this song for many many years at first coming up with it in our Rehearsal Space. We were trying to improvise the worst possible thing you’ve ever heard and the riff for this song came out. We thought it was sick so I took it home and wrote the first verse over it. However, after that, we couldn’t figure out what to do with it until Jack wrote a chorus for it about a year ago and it was like “perfect!” Then it only took a couple sessions to get the whole thing worked out. The song is about knowing you’re gonna die so might as well say fuck it and go after what you want.
5. What would surprise people most about you?
We tend to take our art very seriously, but at the same time we can be silly. So I think people are surprised when they come to our shows and see us act like little silly billies on stage.
Dead Poet Society is Jack Underkofler (vocals/guitar), Jack Collins (guitar), Dylan Brenner (bass), and Will Goodroad (drums).
