98 Rock (WYBB-FM Charleston, SC) added The Dave and Mahoney Morning Show effective Monday, June 24.

In a press release, host and Executive Producer Dave Farra commented, “What an incredible honor it is to bring our show to 98 Rock and LM Communications. I regularly tell people that Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the world. I grew up going to Charleston at every opportunity to enjoy the concerts at the Music Farm, the restaurants of King Street, taking the Shem Creek out for deep sea fishing with my Dad and brothers, and a round of golf with Bill Murray (ok, that never happened, but I’m holding out hope). We think that our content-rich and fast-moving show will play well with the vibrant rock audience that the team at 98 Rock has built. All of us here at the show are beyond excited to continue the growth of The Dave and Mahoney Morning Show with a powerful partner like 98 Rock.”

Myles Kennedy is thoughtful, earnest, and boundlessly talented.

Slash loved his voice and personality so much that he renamed his solo band Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. He’s made seven albums as frontman for Alter Bridge, auditioned for the band that became Velvet Revolver, sang for Guns N’ Roses at their Rock Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, and nearly replaced Robert Plant in a reconstituted Led Zeppelin.

I first met the Spokane, Washington native as he prepared to release his debut solo album, 2018’s Year of the Tiger. I was mesmerized by his performance at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, where he played acoustically alongside his friend and manager, Tim Tournier. His voice and presence resemble the late, great Jeff Buckley, and I felt an instant bond with him in conversation.

His second solo album, The Ides of March, came in 2021. Now he’s gearing up to release his third, the decidedly barn-burning The Art of Letting Go.

We caught up by phone on the eve of the release of his new single, “Say What You Will.”

The Art of Letting Go is due October 11, 2024, via Napalm Records.

This Q&A was slightly edited for length and clarity.

RYAN J. DOWNEY: You work with so many great collaborators, and you can execute your vision as a solo artist. Does it feel like the best of all possible worlds? Or is it overwhelming? What’s the general state of how you compartmentalize all your endeavors?

MYLES KENNEDY: It’s funny when you break it down like that. One could fall prey to being overwhelmed. But as I get older, I’ve tried to adopt the philosophy that ‘Gratitude is the attitude.’ So, I’m grateful for it. For me, the creative element is [even bigger] than performing. That’s the addiction. The solo endeavor has become an exercise in a lot of ways to learn to trust my own judgment.

When collaborating with people, you benefit from that immediate [feedback]. Whereas when you’re all by yourself, you are kind of left to your own devices, and you must cultivate that instinct of like, ‘Yeah, this is good, or, ‘it’s not good,’ because you can end up wasting a lot of time trying to realize an idea that ends up not being up to par at the end.

You’ve worked with producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette on almost a dozen albums.

MYLES: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Elvis has been such an integral part of my career for the last 20-plus years. I love getting back in the saddle with him at the helm, knowing he’s behind the glass when we’re recording. I trust his instincts. If I perform something, and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know. I’m not feeling that.’ I don’t question it. Because I know we will be on the same page in the end. So, it’s been great to make yet another one with Elvis.

Some bands change producers often. For others, a producer is like a band member.

For some artists, it’s good to change it up often, as it will give each record a different flavor. But for me, it’s about that trust. I don’t want to put a bunch of time into writing a batch of tunes and then get into a situation where halfway through preproduction, you realize you made the wrong decision [producer-wise]. And then you’re worried about how your little sonic babies will turn out. I never have to worry about that with Elvis.

Do you sit down with the intention of writing solo stuff? How do you figure out whether it will work for a solo record vs. something you want to show [Alter Bridge guitarist Mark] Tremonti?

From a genre standpoint, Ides of March and especially Year of the Tiger, were very acoustic singer/songwriter [driven]. So, it used to be easy. But with this record, it was much more challenging, [because] the intention was to make a rock record. At times, I’d come up with an idea that straddled the fence of where it could go, and that made it hard. But what ended up happening is that now I’m ahead of the curve. When there’s another album with my other projects, I’ve got these ideas that I knew would work better elsewhere. I have a bit of a head start.

It seems like a good moment to indulge that side as a solo artist, given how busy the other guys in your projects are right now with projects of their own.

Yeah, it’s great. It feels like there’s a clear lane.

When I wrote the record last year, there was a very precise window of time I had to do it. My manager, Tim [Tournier], always has things planned. I mean, my life is planned out for the next five years, really. So, when a manager is kind of cracking the whip in that respect, you don’t want to disappoint them. I just had to hunker down and get this record written.

And what’s interesting about that, other than the fact that I had like six months to write it, it was also kind of a unique situation in that, for the first time in my career, I have this signature guitar that I worked on with Paul Reed Smith. What was interesting about having that guitar, as I was writing this whole record, is that it kind of informed; there was something about that instrument that just really inspired me creatively. In many ways, that guitar is why this record is so riff-based; it’s just a riff machine.

It’s sort of like a traditional old bluesman or something. ‘The magic is in the fiddle.’

Exactly. Like, ‘the devil gave me this.’ Though I promise you, Paul Reed Smith is not the devil. He’s a great guy.

You and I spoke a few years ago for my podcast, No-Prize from God, which wrestles with life’s big questions. The album title, The Art of Letting Go, is certainly evocative and seems to live in that wheelhouse of the spiritual and emotional. I realize it’s also the title track, but album titles are often meant to summarize a whole record.

What’s the significance of this title?

It’s a good question. Because as opposed to the first two solo records, which very much followed a theme throughout and kind of told the story, and this record; this record is a collection of songs. I was in different places at different points. I wanted to be free to express how I felt that day without having to stay on a specific trajectory.

The album title, The Art of Letting Go, sums up where I am with life right now. I’ve been working at becoming less reactive and learning the art of letting go through a lot of Eastern philosophy I’ve absorbed in the last six years, which has profoundly affected how I view the world and life. It’s been just an incredible benefit to me as a human being and creatively. It’s very liberating.

The title, The Art of Letting Go, sums up where I’m at, how it affected this record, and the freedom it allowed me. I started to go down this road around the time of Year of the Tiger. Once that album had been written and recorded, I suddenly had a bit of anxiety about releasing it.

There’s a different kind of vulnerability with the solo stuff. And it’s just your name on the tin.

On the tin. Exactly. And with that came this dire need to figure out how to navigate these waters because it was really affecting me. Fortunately, I started reading, and listening to lectures, and I found this thing that improved my life. I’m so grateful for that period because it’s been life-changing.

How did you choose “Say What You Will” as the album’s first single?

I wrote the intro riff in a hotel while on tour with Alter Bridge. And when I stumbled onto it, I was like, well, that’s it. I’ve been doing this for so long – sometimes ideas will drop in your lap. ‘There we go, that’s what we’ve been looking for.’ I knew the riff would be important. That song wasn’t easy to write because I wanted everything to be at the same level as that main riff, but it was fun. In the end, I knew that was the song. I just knew.

Lyrically, “Say What You Will” is full of piss and vinegar, in a way. I mean, it’s an intense lyric. It was written from a perspective of truth. It’s an empowering proclamation, you know, just to cut through the din of criticism, be it external or your internal voices that you struggle with.

The intro riff was very inspired by Mark Knopfler, believe it or not. I’ve been going through this massive phase of listening to his solo stuff and Dire Straits. But then, the rest of the song, when the band kicks in, it’s as if Jimmy Page and Prince got together with the Smashing Pumpkins. That’s kind of what I feel when I play that riff.

Says the guy who’s been in the room with Jimmy Page!

Well, yeah, I forgot about that.

Now, with three albums worth of solo material and all the songs fans will expect to hear from your other bands, how do you put together a Myles Kennedy setlist?

That’s going to be a tough question to answer. I mean, this is an awesome problem to have. I remember starting in bands years ago, with one record to tour on. After doing it for a while, you have a catalog. I don’t want to disappoint people coming to the show who hope to hear their favorite song. But there are also the songs that are important to me. So, it’s a delicate dance.

As far as songs from other bands, be it Alter Bridge or Slash and the Conspirators, I always want to be careful there. I know fans want to hear a few of those, but out of respect for my bandmates, I don’t want to be up there playing them without them – especially doing them exactly how we do them together. If I do those, I should alter the arrangements somewhat just out of fairness to them. I’m hyper-aware of that. That will be one of the things I’ll have to address once I start working on arrangements and whatnot.

But I am excited because this record is such a rock record.

Were there things that surprised you about these new songs?

    Hmm, anything that surprised me?

Was there anything, musically or lyrically, that made you go, ‘Whoa! That came out of me?’

Yeah, you know, I guess what surprised me to some degree is that I allowed myself a finite amount of time, and most of the songs were written in that six-month window, but a handful percolated for a while. I’m certainly grateful that I was able to get that done. Because usually, I like a little more time. I want a good year to put into a record, if possible, but with all these projects, it’s almost impossible because the clock is ticking, and you must get it done.

What I think pleasantly surprised me is that after making this many records, there are still ideas at this stage. I’m always worried that I will dip into the well, and it will be bone dry. That’s a fear of every songwriter. I’ve been reminded through this process that I still, more than anything, just love creating.

There’s nothing else for me like the high I get when I know a song resonates with me. ‘Okay, I’m tapping into some truth here,’ or if it’s goosebumps because I’m emoting something from an honest place. And as long as I continue to have that portal that I can extend into, I will probably keep doing this because there’s nothing like it. It’s so, so liberating. I can’t imagine life without it.

Everybody’s got the thing that gets them off, that makes them feel alive. I can’t imagine not having that. And for me, it’s songwriting.

So, I’ll say it once again: gratitude is great.

The long-running rap-rock/deathcore band ATTILA invited me to host a new interview series. I sat down with the core trio from the Atlanta band for an in-depth conversation about their past, present, and future.

The band just released a brand new single, “New Devil,” featuring Dickie Allen of Nekrogoblikon. Metal Injection describes the track as “very nü-deathcore.”

“Our interview with Ryan J. Downey is an opportunity for our fans (or non-fans) to see a completely real and organic side of Attila,” the band says. “There are no gimmicks and no bullshit. Just real stories of our personal lives and how Attila came to be. If you appreciate shit that is 100% raw and real, then you will enjoy this interview.”

Steve Albini passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at his home in Chicago, Illinois.

Steve recorded (he hated the term “produced”) essential albums from NirvanaPixies, and PJ Harvey. His extensive discography also includes work with Failure, The Breeders, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Superchunk, Helmet, Jawbreaker, Dazzling Killmen, Jesus Lizard, Neurosis, and many others.

He fronted Big Black from 1981 to 1987 and the short-lived band Rapeman. In 1992, he formed Shellac with Todd Trainer and Bob Weston. A new Shellac record, To All Trains, was already scheduled for release next week via Touch & Go Records.

I spent some time with Steve at his Electrical Audio recording complex in Chicago in 2006, where he recorded Zao’s The Fear is What Keeps Us Here. We documented the sessions with a DVD included in deluxe editions of the album (see it here on YouTube). As he worked away in his signature boilersuit-style uniform, I found Albini as clever, diligent, and driven as his reputation promised. But he was also gentle and a great storyteller who didn’t hold back on rich details and insights.

Steve was 61. He is survived by his wife, documentary filmmaker Heather Whinna.

I love these guys and their team, and I send my heartfelt congrats to them and everyone at Red Bull Music.

MÖTLEY CRÜE will release a new single, “Dogs of War,” on Friday, April 26, as part of their newly announced deal with Big Machine Records.

Produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, Black Veil Brides), the song features the current line-up of cofounding members Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, and Tommy Lee with new guitarist John 5 (ex-Rob Zombie, ex-Marilyn Manson, ex-David Lee Roth).

“It’s a great match for us,” Neil told Classic Rock. “We’re good friends with [Big Machine founder/CEO] Scott Borchetta, who put together the Nashville Outlaws album back in 2014. His company just knows radio, how to get it out there, how to get the right people listening.”

“We self-released Too Fast For Love on our own Leathür Records label,” he added, speaking of the Crüe’s 1981 debut. “It cost $3,000 to make and was done in three days. It was a glorified demo tape, but we were the record label until we got signed by Elektra. We haven’t been on a record label for 20 years. But Scott shares our philosophy, and he’s a brilliant guy.”

Mötley recorded three new songs with longtime producer Rock more than a year ago, including “Dogs Of War” and a cover of BEASTIE BOYS’ “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!.”

OZZY OSBOURNE is among the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees, this time in recognition of his solo career.

It’s the second such honor for Osbourne, who was inducted alongside the rest of the original BLACK SABBATH line-up in 2006.

(Ozzy, rather famously, once asked to have Sabbath removed from consideration in 1999, calling it “meaningless.”)

In an email to Billboard, the 75-year-old heavy metal icon said that becoming one of Rock Hall’s multiple nominees “feels big. I’m more than honored.”

“I definitely wouldn’t say I was confident” about solo success, he added, noting that the 2021 induction of late guitarist RANDY RHOADS in the musical excellence category “made me feel we could be on to something. With every new music venture, there’s always a certain amount of surprise when the fans embrace it because no one wants to make a record and have it flop. I feel like I was invited to a party in 1980, and it hasn’t stopped. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.”

Other inductees in the Performer category are FOREIGNER, PETER FRAMPTON, MARY J. BLIGE, CHER, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, KOOL & THE GANG, and A TRIBE CALLED QUEST.

JIMMY BUFFETT, MC5, DIONNE WARWICK, and NORMAN WHITFIELD will be presented with the Musical Excellence Award.

The induction ceremony will be held on October 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will air live on Disney+. An edited version will run on ABC later and be available on Hulu the day after.

The BAD OMENS single “Just Pretend” was just certified platinum by the RIAA for digital sales and streams in excess of 1 million.

The smash rock hit, which originally went gold in July 2023, has continued to be a success on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, among other places.

“Just Pretend” was written and produced by the band’s own Noah Sebastian and Joakim Karlsson. Sebastian revealed in an interview with NME that it began as a parody of “butt rock” radio hits:

“At the time, I was frustrated with people in my ear talking about, ‘Oh, you need to focus on the radio,” the band’s frontman explained. “Never having an ulterior motive when writing has always been a strict rule of ours. We just want to make music that we like and we’re proud of. So with ‘Just Pretend,’ it started as this ironic butt-rock song. Even the way I was singing in the demo, I was doing this exaggerated bravado. As silly as the vocal sounded I was like, ‘This is actually a really great chorus.’ I was kind of just freestyling. I had written some chords and I just started singing in the booth over it. And this melody came out, the lyrics came out really quickly.”

Once the song hit No. 1 on the rock radio charts, Bad Omens concluded, “It’s the most ironic full-circle moment this band will probably ever have.”

“Just Pretend” appears on the band’s 2022 album, The Death of Peace of Mind (Sumerian Records). The album’s title track was certified gold in January of this year.

Earlier today, 101 The Fox (KCFX-FM) in Kansas City released a statement about the passing of longtime afternoon host Brian “Slacker” Adams, who died last night (Tuesday, April 16th) after a valiant battle against cancer. Slacker, a 33-year veteran of Kansas City radio, was on-air at 101 The Fox for the last 16 years. He was 59.

“It is with a broken heart that we share with you that our friend Slacker has passed away due to complications from AML.

His wife Jennifer and daughter Brianna were with him at home as he left this life. We know you’ll join us at 101 The Fox in expressing your heartfelt condolences to Slacker’s family. Slacker had two great passions – his family and his time on the air in Kansas City.

For over 33 years, the last 16 at 101 The Fox, Slacker loved to entertain his radio audience. He helped Veterans with Cars 4 Heroes and many other charities. He pointed out the little absurdities we all deal with, making us laugh at him and ourselves.

Named a Radio Legend by his peers, Slacker was the voice of and for Kansas City. Sadly, that voice is now silent.

If you choose, Slacker asked that you pray for his family and all who are affected by cancer. And pick up the phone and talk to that friend you haven’t gotten around to talking to today. Slacker would like that.”

    101 The Fox, Kansas City

101 The Fox will air a one-hour Slacker Special tonight at 6:00 p.m. Central.

In the special, Slacker talks about his favorite interviews, music, and what he loved about being on the radio in Kansas City.

To stream the special, visit 101TheFox.net.

The station has also posted a video tribute to Slacker HERE.

#HAPPENS taps longtime journalist and rock manager Ryan J. Downey to lead new ROCK division.

Downey will curate a New Music Discovery experience for the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock community, bringing new content to the recently relaunched #HAPPENS website and delivering a rock-oriented #HAPPENS VIP newsletter to inboxes three times per week. These new services will operate in tandem with the #HAPPENS New Music Discovery Download Service soft-launched in January 2024.

“I’m very excited to help the team at #HAPPENS expand the service they provide to the rock music community,” says Downey. “Music is a universal language, and rock, in particular, continues to play a pivotal role in my life, like so many of us. #HAPPENS recognized the need for a new destination point for artists, programmers, on-air talent, labels, and the like to stay current on the genre. When they invited me to embark on the journey with them, the idea of partnering together for the Rock side made perfect sense.”

Industry veterans Todd Sievers, Ken Pittman, and Beatrix Danko established the annual #HAPPENS event in 2018. The top radio programmers, label executives, tastemakers, artists, and brands unite for thought-provoking conversations, unique social experiences, and live showcases each year. Participants have included The Offspring, Papa Roach, Alter Bridge, Nickelback, Fever 333, Daughtry, Biffy Clyro, Nita Strauss, Mammoth WVH, and members of Deftones, Korn, and System Of A Down, among many others.

“I really enjoyed working with Ryan as a manager and respect his commitment and passion to his artists and for the Rock format,” says Sievers. “His pension for details, metrics, and creative entrepreneurship is impressive. We think he will be an incredible addition to the #HAPPENS team and will help us grow into the industry-leading artist development company at the rock format.”

#HAPPENS mission is to foster Music, Discovery, and Community. The launch of the new ROCK destination comes just a few months after the launch of ALTERNATIVE, headed up by Shawn Alexander, who previously spent over 27 years at ALL ACCESS as SVP/Strategy, Music Formats & Alternative Editor.

“I’ve been an admirer of Ryan’s vast array of content for a while now,” Pittman says. “Giving him the reins and having him lead our new Rock division is an opportunity we simply could not turn down. I’m beyond excited to partner with Ryan and create an amazing service to our community.”

Downey has contributed as writer, host, and executive producer to several broadcast, digital, and print outlets, including MTV News, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, and the GRAMMYs. He hosts the Speak N’ Destroy podcast and publishes the top rock and metal publication on Substack, Stream N’ Destroy.

As host of the MI Conversation Series at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, Downey’s guests have included Brendon Urie (Panic! At The Disco), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Ace Frehley (KISS), and Rob Halford (Judas Priest). He is the co-author of books with Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides and Ronnie Radke of Falling In Reverse, as well as graphic novel stories for Pantera, Type O Negative, and Ice Nine Kills.

While Senior Editor for Alternative Press, he wrote over a dozen cover stories on artists, including in-depth features on Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Motionless In White. As a longtime artist manager, Downey represents Demon Hunter, Throwdown, and producer Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Queensrÿche).

Daughtry achieved a significant milestone as “Artificial” ascended to the top spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, dated February 17.

It’s been 17 years since the Chris Daughtry-led band first broke into the chart with “It’s Not Over,” which peaked at No. 5 in March 2007.

Chris Daughtry began his career in earnest as a contestant on American Idol, where he placed fourth during the competition show’s fifth season in 2006.

Daughtry returned to the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with 2020’s “World on Fire.”

Meanwhile, “Artificial” continues its ascent on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, moving from 14 to 13 with a 13% increase in audience impressions. The song also ranks at No. 12 on the most recent Hot Hard Rock Songs list, bolstered by both radio airplay and streaming activity.

“Artificial” arrived as a standalone single as the follow-up to 2021’s Dearly Beloved, which has accumulated 88,000 equivalent album units to date, according to Luminate.
