Cumulus Media Saginaw’s The Rock Station Z93 and PD Matt Bingham Break Mid-Michigan Fundraising Record for the American Cancer Society’s Annual Men Wear Pink Campaign to Fight Breast Cancer

Saginaw, Michigan Rock station Z93 (WKQZ-FM) and Z93 Program Director Matt Bingham have raised over $30,000 in community donations during the American Cancer Society’s Men Wear Pink annual fundraising campaign. Z93 set a new fundraising record for Mid-Michigan, landing Bingham and the station in the Top 30 Men Wear Pink ambassadors nationwide. Together, they have participated in Men Wear Pink for the last six years, raising a total of more than $90,000, which helps fuel a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support, breakthrough breast cancer research, and much more.

Matt Bingham, Z93 Program Director and Co-Host of The Morning After with Matt and Adam, said via press release: “It’s tough to put into words how much it means to set a new record in Mid-Michigan of $30,025 raised through Men Wear Pink for the American Cancer Society, but I know I couldn’t have done it on my own. We would not have surpassed our goal without the help of both our listeners and the countless local businesses that offered up fundraising opportunities. It truly was a team effort and I’m excited to see how much we can raise next year!’

Ashley Wellman, Senior Development Manager, Michigan, for the American Cancer Society, said: ‘We are so thankful for everything that Matt Bingham and the Z93 team have done during their Men Wear Pink campaign over the last six years! Each year, Matt has set a new standard and been able to increase his fundraising totals from the year before, while engaging new people in the community. The team at Z93 has been instrumental in helping the American Cancer Society not only raise life-saving funds but also create more awareness around life-saving cancer screenings, resources, and patient support programs. He has been able to help us reach a wider audience then we would have been able to do on our own.”

Wellman added: “You can tell that Matt and the team at Z93 have created amazing longstanding relationships with listeners and businesses in the area. We are so grateful to work with such generous supporters of the American Cancer Society, who understand our mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.”

Andre Gardner was let go as afternoon host at Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK Philadelphia after 22 years in the role.

His illustrious career in radio stretches back to 1977. It includes an eight-year stint at 92.3 K-Rock WXRK New York, with time as APD/MD, Program Director, Production Director, and Howard Stern’s dump button operator.

He hosted the syndicated Breakfast With The Beatles from 2002 to 2022.

Beasley Media Group allowed Andre to let listeners know during a final afternoon station break on October 18. He also shared the following statement on social media:

“I wanted to let you know that today, 10/18/24, is my last day on 102.9 MGK.

The radio business has faced huge challenges over the last decade, with a continuing decrease in ad revenues and the shift to digital. This change has forced radio companies like Beasley, Heart and Audacy to make some tough strategic decisions.

Yesterday I was informed that, due to budgetary issues, my position has been eliminated.

I want to thank Market Manager Paul Blake and our PD Eric Johnson for gifting me a true rarity in this business – the chance to say goodbye on the air this afternoon. I will be forever grateful.

It has been a dream come true for me to be your afternoon host on MGK lo these many years. The experiences and memories I’ve had, and the men and women l’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with, has been an incredible honor, a great privilege, and a hell of a lot of fun. Many thanks to my friend Buzz Knight for bringing me to Philly and MGK in 2002, after almost a decade in NYC. It was so nice to come home!

I can’t say much now about what’s next on MGK afternoons, but I assure you that you will be in good hands.
What’s next for me? Who knows?! And THAT is actually very exciting!

From the bottom of my heart, thank YOU for hanging with me and being on the other end of the speakers or ear buds. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

JAKE E. LEE, best known as one of OZZY OSBOURNE ‘s most formidable former axemen, is expected to recover after being shot multiple times in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the early morning hours of October 15.

SiriusXM‘s EDDIE TRUNK reported on social media that Lee “was hit three times — in the chest, arm and foot. Bullets missed all major organs except [the] lung. But he is doing well and expected to make a full recovery.”

Trunk added that he had gotten the information from Lee’s manager.

Osbourne told TMZ via statement: “It’s been 37 years since I’ve seen Jake E. Lee, but that still doesn’t take away from the shock of hearing what happened to him today. It’s just another senseless act of gun violence. I send my thoughts to him and his beautiful daughter, Jade. I just hope he’ll be OK.”

A statement from Lee’s representatives released earlier today reads:

“As confirmed by management, legendary rock guitarist Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osbourne, Badlands, Red Dragon Cartel) was shot multiple times early this morning in a Las Vegas, NV street shooting. Lee is fully conscious and doing well in an intensive care unit at a Las Vegas hospital. He is expected to fully recover.

Las Vegas authorities believe the shooting was completely random and occurred while Lee took his dog out for a walk in the early morning hours. As the incident is under police investigation, no further comments will be forthcoming. Lee and his family appreciate respecting their privacy at this time.”

A member of Ozzy’s band from 1982 to 1987, Lee performed on Bark At The Moon (1983) and The Ultimate Sin (1986).

In a Facebook post, KOMP morning host Brandon “Gooch” Hahn called Armstrong, 52, “old and bitter.” He went on to insult the Bay Area, California group’s “four or five” most recent albums.

The handful of bans came in response to Armstrong’s comments regarding the Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas during a recent San Francisco performance.

“I f—— hate Las Vegas,” he reportedly said. “It’s the worst s—hole in America.”

Beasley Media’s Alternative KXTE (X1075 Xtreme Radio) also pulled Green Day from their airwaves.

Chris Brown was among the massive layoffs at Atlantic Music Group, owned by Warner Music Group. Brown served as executive vice president at Elektra Entertainment and co-head of Roadrunner Records.

Cees Wessels formed Roadrunner in The Netherlands in 1980.

The label grew to international prominence (with offices in New York, among other cities) in the hard rock and metal underground with seminal releases from King Diamond, Obituary, Sepultura, and Machine Head.

Type O Negative gave the label its first gold album; Slipknot was the first to go platinum. The label was also the longtime home to Nickelback (except in Canada).

In 2007, Wessels sold 73.5% of Roadrunner Records to Warner Music Group, which acquired the remaining stock in 2010. In 2012, WMG closed Roadrunner’s offices in the UK, Canada, and Denmark, with Wessels stepping down as CEO. Roadrunner fell under Elektra in 2018 and then 300 Elektra Entertainment in 2022.

BEARTOOTH can now add “platinum” to their list of accomplishments.

This week, the RIAA certified “In Between” platinum for sales and equivalent streams of over 1 million units.

The 2014 single, released by Red Bull Music, went gold four years ago.

It appears on the band’s debut album, Disgusting

“It’s no secret it’s been an insane ride for the gang since this release, and it’s not over by a long shot!” longtime manager Thomas Gutches wrote in an email to those closest to Beartooth, including yours truly. “It’s so wild to think that some of you saw the band in someone’s basement or a bar just before this song was even composed.”

Beartooth is the chief creative outlet of Caleb Shomo, who writes, engineers, and produces the band’s albums while performing all of the instruments in the studio, to boot.

Earlier today, Beartooth released “ATTN.”, a new single and video from the Deluxe Edition of their most recent album, 2023’s The Surface. The album earned the band their first pair of No. 1 singles at Active Rock – “Might Love Myself” and “I Was Alive.”

Michelle Kerr passed away on September 14. The veteran hard rock and metal publicist died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones after a five-year-long fight against cancer.

I first met Michelle when she ran the publicity department for Roadrunner Records’ UK office, where she worked with Nickelback, Korn, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, and Type O Negative, among others.

After 17 years with the company, she cofounded Cosa Nostra PR with fellow Roadrunner alum Kirsten Sprinks. The boutique firm quickly expanded into the United States with the additions of Charley Johns and Becky Black. Cosa Nostra PR clients in the US office include Ice Nine Kills, Slaughter To Prevail, and Twiztid

Kerrang! published a personal remembrance from photographer Paul Harries, which you can read here. Music Week collected social media posts from Robb Flynn, Jamey Jasta, Matt Heafy, Black Stone Cherry, 5B Artist Management, and more, who loved and knew her well. Metal Injection did, as well.

A GoFundMe has been launched to help with Kerr‘s memorial costs.

    Rest easy now, Michelle.

LAURA LEE joins 105.7 WAPL / Appleton-Oshkosh-Green Bay as morning show co-host. Mornings with Laura Lee & Cutter debuts on the Wisconsin Classic Rock station on September 23.

“I’m excited to have someone join me who can help propel this legendary radio station into the future,” said Cutter in a press release. “Laura embodies the spirit of WAPL; she knows the music and understands our listeners. Plus, she’s willing to put up with me, which is a great start!”

Added Lee: “I’m glad I never got rid of my 32oz truckers mega-mug for coffee last time I did mornings. I haven’t had to wake up this early in a long time but I’m incredibly pumped to be joining the famed WAPL and looking forward to teaming up with Cutter for a new era of WAPL mornings. He knows the market, the audience loves him and he’s a pretty pleasant individual even at 5am in the morning.”

Brand Manager Joe Marroe added, “Laura truly lives the WAPL lifestyle. She’s passionate about concerts, hockey, and football—though we’re hoping to convert her allegiance from the Vikings! With the innovative ideas Laura and Cutter are bringing to the table, I can’t wait to see what unfolds on the air.”

WCM General Manager Kelly Radandt also shared her excitement: “For the last 35 years, I’ve loved 105.7 WAPL because of our dedicated team members like Rick, Len, Cutter, John, Ross, Karla, Roxanne, and many more. I’m looking forward to continuing that tradition with Laura Lee, ensuring we keep providing our listeners with kick-ass rock music and meaningful connections.”

I recently caught up with Zero 9:36 (aka Matthew Cullen) about how he started making DIY songs as an 11-year-old, his creative process, working with different producers, and his new single, “Chasing Shadows,” from the recently released None of Us Are Getting Out EP (ONErpm).

    Zero 9:36 Photo: Jimmy Fontaine

RYAN J. DOWNEY: Tell me about the creation of “Chasing Shadows.”

ZERO 9:36: My producer, No Love for the Middle Child, and I start on acoustic whenever we write anything. Then, we’ll tune everything strangely to see if that gives us any different inspiration. He’s like a musical genius so that he can do that naturally, but for me, it’s easier to find an interesting riff when it’s tuned differently. So, he played that one, and immediately I was like, ‘Hey, put that in.’ We were working with producer Erik Ron at his place. Erik said, ‘Yeah, we have to move fast on this one. I love where this is going.’

I had the melody and the idea for the song immediately as soon as the acoustic riff came. Erik wrote the heavy parts. We started putting drums on it. Those vocals are three and a half years old at this point. I was going to recut them, but any time I recut my vocals, I lose the feeling from that [original take].  Even though I feel I’m a better singer now – people actually asked me if these are new vocals, which is nice to hear. But Erik is an incredible vocal producer. We did these in one day.

Nobody at my then-label was excited about the song at the time, but I’ve always been extremely excited about it, and my management was, as well. Now we are working with ONErpm; the song was one of their favorites, too. I just had to hold onto it for three years until some other people believed in it.

Where is the song coming from lyrically? I bet it’s interesting to revisit three years later.

The song is about that definition of insanity: doing the same thing repeatedly but expecting different results.

Much of the conversation about you involves your “post-genre” style eclecticism. It’s demonstrative of where we’ve arrived culturally with music. Many people are less segregated by genre and subgenre. Why do you think it’s become more prevalent to mash it all up now?

I grew up during the big switch from CDs to Limewire and then iTunes. Sometimes you’d try to download a certain song on Limewire and end up with something entirely different.

Some marketing folks started mislabeling files on purpose.

I’d heard that! I heard artists were doing it on purpose, too. Genius marketing. I think being kind of in that shift of my brother giving me CDs, my dad giving me CDs, Limewire, iTunes, and YouTube, I think that’s why genre-mixing is so prevalent now. Linkin Park was the first to do it at a big level in the early 2000s. That’s around the same time I started making music. I was about 11 years old. My parent’s generation was only getting information from however many sources. I grew up during a time with much more access.

I understand that your late father turned you onto rock and metal, but rap was the first stuff you made as a kid. One of the brilliant things about hip-hop is that you can make it by yourself. That wasn’t always true about rock n’ roll, where you needed a handful of people playing different instruments.

We had Xbox headsets and a computer. I watched YouTube tutorials on how to mix a song in Adobe’s Cool Edit Pro. Everything was permanent in Cool Edit Pro. If you clicked the compressor or reverb button, you could not change it after the fact. I made probably 100 songs by the time I was 12.

Doing so much as a young DIY producer must have given you a different perspective by the time you worked with more experienced people like Erik Ron, Drew Fulk, and Travis Barker.

The bigger advantage I’ve had was being comfortable writing songs and knowing what I would sound like because I’ve heard it 100 times. When you go into these studios with these producers and stuff like that, the main thing that I like to do is kind of do whatever they say because otherwise, I can just make music on my own. If I’m not going to take their advice, I may as well stay home. I love collaborating, and everything that has ever been collaborative, for the most part, is a better product in the end, whether that be physical products or clothing or music, so you’re not pigeonholed by your ideas. I loved working with all of the people I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with them all multiple times. Having my own recording experience, I know what I’m doing well enough to take their advice. Erik, Drew, Mark Jackson, and Ian Scott, who did “Adrenaline,” and my producer, No Love, are my main guys. I keep going back to specific people for a reason.

Tell me about this new EP.

There are seven songs plus an acoustic version of ‘I Felt It All’ I did with Landon [Tewers] from The Plot In You. He produced the first single, and No Love produced the second one. Cody Quistad from Wage War produced the third. No Love and I produced ‘Nine Three Six.’ It sucks not to release more songs at a time.

How do you hope “Chasing Shadows” hits people?

Anytime I make a song like this, I hope it’s something they can relate to themselves and know that they’re not alone. I get that a lot, especially with ‘Adrenaline’ or other songs where people are like, ‘Oh, this song made me realize that I’m not the only one [going through] this. The world isn’t against me, I have to get out of my own way. That’s the only goal of the song. You know, everything else is great, but if someone legitimately helps themselves through this song, I can’t really ask for anything more than that. #

Emily Armstrong is the new co-vocalist of Linkin Park.

The band announced the addition of Armstrong and new drummer Colin Brittain on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

The news coincided with a new single and music video, a global livestream, and the unveiling of a forthcoming album and a half-dozen arena shows set for Los Angeles, New York, London, Hamburg, Seoul, and Bogota.

Armstrong is best known as the singer for Dead Sara, whose most recent album, Ain’t It Tragic, was released by Warner Records in 2021.  Brittain’s extensive credits as a songwriter and producer in the rock world include work with 5 Seconds Of Summer, ONE OK ROCK, Papa Roach, All Time Low, Hands Like Houses, From Ashes To New, A Day To Remember, and Story Of The Year, among others.

The pair join Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, and Joseph Hahn as the new Linkin Park. (Founding drummer Rob Bourdon reportedly declined to participate.)

“The Emptiness Machine” is the first single and video from the reconstituted band’s forthcoming new album, FROM ZERO, due November 15 via longtime home Warner Records.

A Warner press release explains that Shinoda, Delson, Farrell, and Hahn began quietly meeting in recent years, leading to time in the studio with various collaborators.

“The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created,” Shinoda said in a press release. “We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”

“Before LINKIN PARK, our first band name was Xero,” he added.  “This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what LINKIN PARK has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”

SoCal alt-radio vet Chris Cantore will also join as producer.

Ryker’s experience as Creative Director at Alt 98.7 in Los Angeles and Senior Creative Director for Rock and Alternative at iHeartMedia has made Skratch ‘N Sniff a go-to show for Rock and Alternative listeners.

Last year, Allison launched The Allison Hagendorf Show, a weekly video podcast series. She is the former Global Head of Rock at Spotify and host/executive producer of the Spotify Original Series Rock This with Allison Hagendorf. Skratch ‘N Sniff brings back the unpredictability to radio that’s been missing since it started becoming pre-programmed by corporate America.”

Boston’s ROCK 92.9, along with Dave and Chuck the Freak, will be heard on 92.9 WBOS-FM HD2 106.1 FM, WRCA 1330 AM, and on the ROCK 92.9 App and stream.

This follows a switch for 92.9 over to Bloomberg Radio.

As ROCK 92.9 program director Adam 12 explained on the station’s website: “After Dave & Chuck the Freak, you’ll still get the most commercial-free rock in Boston. Just without Adam 12 and Hardy. Hardy can still be heard on 98.5 the Sports Hub. As for Adam 12? Well, I’ll tell you. I’m the one writing this, after all.

“Listen after Dave & Chuck the Freak on Tuesday, September 3, as I say goodbye to ROCK 92.9, much like I did at WFNX in 2012 and WBCN in 2009. Third time’s a charm!”

Jack Russell, the former lead singer of Great White, died on August 7, 2024.

Great White’s hits include the onetime MTV staple  “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” “Rock Me,” and “The Angel Song.”

Russell, 63, reportedly died due to complications from Lewy Body Dementia and Multiple System Atrophy.

Russell’s death was announced on Thursday, August 15, via the late singer’s social media.

“With tremendous sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jack Patrick Russell — father, husband, cousin, uncle, and friend. “Jack passed peacefully in the presence of his wife, Heather Ann Russell, son Matthew Hucko, cousin Naomi Breshears Barbor, and dear friends Billy and Cheryl Pawelcik.

Details of a public memorial will be announced at a later date.

Jack is loved and remembered for his sense of humor, exceptional zest for life, and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll, where his legacy will forever thrive.

His family asks for privacy at this time.”

Russell had announced his retirement from touring in a statement posted on July 17.

“To my fans and friends, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I must announce my retirement from the road,” the statement read. “After a recent diagnosis of Lewy body dementia (LBD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) in May 2024, I am unable to perform at the level I desire and at the level you deserve. Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support.

Thank you for letting me live my dreams. You have made my life a wonder.”

Russell was born December 5, 1960, in Montebello, California.

He met guitarist Mark Kendall in 1977. Russell was arrested after a botched home invasion, during which he (non-fatally) shot a live-in maid. He served 18 months of an eight-year prison sentence.

Great White released their first EP in 1983. Once Bitten (1987) went platinum. Twice Shy (1989) went double-platinum.

After the group disbanded in 2001, Russell led a new incarnation, Jack Russell’s Great White

He was performing with his version of the band when a pyrotechnics display sparked a nightclub fire that killed 100 people at a 2003 concert in Rhode Island, including guitarist Ty Longley. The band’s 1996 – 2000 lineup reformed in 2007. Health complications caused Russell to split from the group in 2011, followed by a new version of Jack Russell’s Great White.

The two versions of the band sued each other before settling without going to court in July 2013.

Lewy body dementia is the second most common cause of neurodegenerative dementia after Alzheimer’s disease.

Russell’s autobiography, The True Tale of Mista Bone, was published last month. It was written with K.L. Doty and features a foreword from rocker Lita Ford. The book is available here

98 Rock (WYBB-FM Charleston, SC) added The Dave and Mahoney Morning Show effective Monday, June 24.

In a press release, host and Executive Producer Dave Farra commented, “What an incredible honor it is to bring our show to 98 Rock and LM Communications. I regularly tell people that Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the world. I grew up going to Charleston at every opportunity to enjoy the concerts at the Music Farm, the restaurants of King Street, taking the Shem Creek out for deep sea fishing with my Dad and brothers, and a round of golf with Bill Murray (ok, that never happened, but I’m holding out hope). We think that our content-rich and fast-moving show will play well with the vibrant rock audience that the team at 98 Rock has built. All of us here at the show are beyond excited to continue the growth of The Dave and Mahoney Morning Show with a powerful partner like 98 Rock.”

The long-running rap-rock/deathcore band ATTILA invited me to host a new interview series. I sat down with the core trio from the Atlanta band for an in-depth conversation about their past, present, and future.

The band just released a brand new single, “New Devil,” featuring Dickie Allen of Nekrogoblikon. Metal Injection describes the track as “very nü-deathcore.”

“Our interview with Ryan J. Downey is an opportunity for our fans (or non-fans) to see a completely real and organic side of Attila,” the band says. “There are no gimmicks and no bullshit. Just real stories of our personal lives and how Attila came to be. If you appreciate shit that is 100% raw and real, then you will enjoy this interview.”

Steve Albini passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at his home in Chicago, Illinois.

Steve recorded (he hated the term “produced”) essential albums from NirvanaPixies, and PJ Harvey. His extensive discography also includes work with Failure, The Breeders, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Superchunk, Helmet, Jawbreaker, Dazzling Killmen, Jesus Lizard, Neurosis, and many others.

He fronted Big Black from 1981 to 1987 and the short-lived band Rapeman. In 1992, he formed Shellac with Todd Trainer and Bob Weston. A new Shellac record, To All Trains, was already scheduled for release next week via Touch & Go Records.

I spent some time with Steve at his Electrical Audio recording complex in Chicago in 2006, where he recorded Zao’s The Fear is What Keeps Us Here. We documented the sessions with a DVD included in deluxe editions of the album (see it here on YouTube). As he worked away in his signature boilersuit-style uniform, I found Albini as clever, diligent, and driven as his reputation promised. But he was also gentle and a great storyteller who didn’t hold back on rich details and insights.

Steve was 61. He is survived by his wife, documentary filmmaker Heather Whinna.

MÖTLEY CRÜE will release a new single, “Dogs of War,” on Friday, April 26, as part of their newly announced deal with Big Machine Records.

Produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, Black Veil Brides), the song features the current line-up of cofounding members Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, and Tommy Lee with new guitarist John 5 (ex-Rob Zombie, ex-Marilyn Manson, ex-David Lee Roth).

“It’s a great match for us,” Neil told Classic Rock. “We’re good friends with [Big Machine founder/CEO] Scott Borchetta, who put together the Nashville Outlaws album back in 2014. His company just knows radio, how to get it out there, how to get the right people listening.”

“We self-released Too Fast For Love on our own Leathür Records label,” he added, speaking of the Crüe’s 1981 debut. “It cost $3,000 to make and was done in three days. It was a glorified demo tape, but we were the record label until we got signed by Elektra. We haven’t been on a record label for 20 years. But Scott shares our philosophy, and he’s a brilliant guy.”

Mötley recorded three new songs with longtime producer Rock more than a year ago, including “Dogs Of War” and a cover of BEASTIE BOYS’ “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!.”

OZZY OSBOURNE is among the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees, this time in recognition of his solo career.

It’s the second such honor for Osbourne, who was inducted alongside the rest of the original BLACK SABBATH line-up in 2006.

(Ozzy, rather famously, once asked to have Sabbath removed from consideration in 1999, calling it “meaningless.”)

In an email to Billboard, the 75-year-old heavy metal icon said that becoming one of Rock Hall’s multiple nominees “feels big. I’m more than honored.”

“I definitely wouldn’t say I was confident” about solo success, he added, noting that the 2021 induction of late guitarist RANDY RHOADS in the musical excellence category “made me feel we could be on to something. With every new music venture, there’s always a certain amount of surprise when the fans embrace it because no one wants to make a record and have it flop. I feel like I was invited to a party in 1980, and it hasn’t stopped. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.”

Other inductees in the Performer category are FOREIGNER, PETER FRAMPTON, MARY J. BLIGE, CHER, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, KOOL & THE GANG, and A TRIBE CALLED QUEST.

JIMMY BUFFETT, MC5, DIONNE WARWICK, and NORMAN WHITFIELD will be presented with the Musical Excellence Award.

The induction ceremony will be held on October 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will air live on Disney+. An edited version will run on ABC later and be available on Hulu the day after.

The BAD OMENS single “Just Pretend” was just certified platinum by the RIAA for digital sales and streams in excess of 1 million.

The smash rock hit, which originally went gold in July 2023, has continued to be a success on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, among other places.

“Just Pretend” was written and produced by the band’s own Noah Sebastian and Joakim Karlsson. Sebastian revealed in an interview with NME that it began as a parody of “butt rock” radio hits:

“At the time, I was frustrated with people in my ear talking about, ‘Oh, you need to focus on the radio,” the band’s frontman explained. “Never having an ulterior motive when writing has always been a strict rule of ours. We just want to make music that we like and we’re proud of. So with ‘Just Pretend,’ it started as this ironic butt-rock song. Even the way I was singing in the demo, I was doing this exaggerated bravado. As silly as the vocal sounded I was like, ‘This is actually a really great chorus.’ I was kind of just freestyling. I had written some chords and I just started singing in the booth over it. And this melody came out, the lyrics came out really quickly.”

Once the song hit No. 1 on the rock radio charts, Bad Omens concluded, “It’s the most ironic full-circle moment this band will probably ever have.”

“Just Pretend” appears on the band’s 2022 album, The Death of Peace of Mind (Sumerian Records). The album’s title track was certified gold in January of this year.

Earlier today, 101 The Fox (KCFX-FM) in Kansas City released a statement about the passing of longtime afternoon host Brian “Slacker” Adams, who died last night (Tuesday, April 16th) after a valiant battle against cancer. Slacker, a 33-year veteran of Kansas City radio, was on-air at 101 The Fox for the last 16 years. He was 59.

“It is with a broken heart that we share with you that our friend Slacker has passed away due to complications from AML.

His wife Jennifer and daughter Brianna were with him at home as he left this life. We know you’ll join us at 101 The Fox in expressing your heartfelt condolences to Slacker’s family. Slacker had two great passions – his family and his time on the air in Kansas City.

For over 33 years, the last 16 at 101 The Fox, Slacker loved to entertain his radio audience. He helped Veterans with Cars 4 Heroes and many other charities. He pointed out the little absurdities we all deal with, making us laugh at him and ourselves.

Named a Radio Legend by his peers, Slacker was the voice of and for Kansas City. Sadly, that voice is now silent.

If you choose, Slacker asked that you pray for his family and all who are affected by cancer. And pick up the phone and talk to that friend you haven’t gotten around to talking to today. Slacker would like that.”

    101 The Fox, Kansas City

101 The Fox will air a one-hour Slacker Special tonight at 6:00 p.m. Central.

In the special, Slacker talks about his favorite interviews, music, and what he loved about being on the radio in Kansas City.

#HAPPENS taps longtime journalist and rock manager Ryan J. Downey to lead new ROCK division.

Downey will curate a New Music Discovery experience for the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock community, bringing new content to the recently relaunched #HAPPENS website and delivering a rock-oriented #HAPPENS VIP newsletter to inboxes three times per week. These new services will operate in tandem with the #HAPPENS New Music Discovery Download Service soft-launched in January 2024.

“I’m very excited to help the team at #HAPPENS expand the service they provide to the rock music community,” says Downey. “Music is a universal language, and rock, in particular, continues to play a pivotal role in my life, like so many of us. #HAPPENS recognized the need for a new destination point for artists, programmers, on-air talent, labels, and the like to stay current on the genre. When they invited me to embark on the journey with them, the idea of partnering together for the Rock side made perfect sense.”

Industry veterans Todd Sievers, Ken Pittman, and Beatrix Danko established the annual #HAPPENS event in 2018. The top radio programmers, label executives, tastemakers, artists, and brands unite for thought-provoking conversations, unique social experiences, and live showcases each year. Participants have included The Offspring, Papa Roach, Alter Bridge, Nickelback, Fever 333, Daughtry, Biffy Clyro, Nita Strauss, Mammoth WVH, and members of Deftones, Korn, and System Of A Down, among many others.

“I really enjoyed working with Ryan as a manager and respect his commitment and passion to his artists and for the Rock format,” says Sievers. “His pension for details, metrics, and creative entrepreneurship is impressive. We think he will be an incredible addition to the #HAPPENS team and will help us grow into the industry-leading artist development company at the rock format.”

#HAPPENS mission is to foster Music, Discovery, and Community. The launch of the new ROCK destination comes just a few months after the launch of ALTERNATIVE, headed up by Shawn Alexander, who previously spent over 27 years at ALL ACCESS as SVP/Strategy, Music Formats & Alternative Editor.

“I’ve been an admirer of Ryan’s vast array of content for a while now,” Pittman says. “Giving him the reins and having him lead our new Rock division is an opportunity we simply could not turn down. I’m beyond excited to partner with Ryan and create an amazing service to our community.”

Downey has contributed as writer, host, and executive producer to several broadcast, digital, and print outlets, including MTV News, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, and the GRAMMYs. He hosts the Speak N’ Destroy podcast and publishes the top rock and metal publication on Substack, Stream N’ Destroy.

As host of the MI Conversation Series at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, Downey’s guests have included Brendon Urie (Panic! At The Disco), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Ace Frehley (KISS), and Rob Halford (Judas Priest). He is the co-author of books with Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides and Ronnie Radke of Falling In Reverse, as well as graphic novel stories for Pantera, Type O Negative, and Ice Nine Kills.

While Senior Editor for Alternative Press, he wrote over a dozen cover stories on artists, including in-depth features on Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Motionless In White. As a longtime artist manager, Downey represents Demon Hunter, Throwdown, and producer Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Queensrÿche).

Downey and the rest of the team will be at #HAPPENS2024, February 28 – March 1 in Las Vegas.

Daughtry achieved a significant milestone as “Artificial” ascended to the top spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, dated February 17.

It’s been 17 years since the Chris Daughtry-led band first broke into the chart with “It’s Not Over,” which peaked at No. 5 in March 2007.

Daughtry returned to the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with 2020’s “World on Fire.”

Meanwhile, “Artificial” continues its ascent on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, moving from 14 to 13 with a 13% increase in audience impressions. The song also ranks at No. 12 on the most recent Hot Hard Rock Songs list, bolstered by both radio airplay and streaming activity.

“Artificial” arrived as a standalone single as the follow-up to 2021’s Dearly Beloved, which has accumulated 88,000 equivalent album units to date, according to Luminate.
